Test Your Precious Metals at Home

Not sure if your items are real gold or silver? Here are some simple tests you can try before visiting us.

Au Testing Gold

1

Magnifying Glass Test

Look for visual clues: discoloration, color, shininess, and the purity hallmark. If it doesn't pass this initial test, it's likely not real gold.

2

Hallmark Test

Look for gold markings—mandatory marks engraved on gold items. On necklaces and bracelets, find them near the clasp; on rings, check the inside surface.

3

Float Test

Place your gold item in water. Genuine gold will sink to the bottom due to its high density. Fake or plated gold will float.

Ag Testing Silver

Signs of authentic silver:

  • Look for the official stamp—most countries require pure silver to have one
  • Use a magnifying glass to find the International Silver Stamp Rating (a three-digit number)
  • Check for poor luster, off-center strikes, or corrosion on coins
  • Look for mint marks—counterfeiters often skip these details

Sterling Silver: Look for".925" marking, indicating 92.5% pure silver—the standard for quality silver jewelry and flatware.

FAQ

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about selling precious metals. Have another question?

Yes, we purchase precious metals in any condition. Broken chains, bent rings, or damaged pieces still have value in their metal content.
We use live spot prices from the commodities market, then factor in the karat purity and weight of your items. We show you this calculation so you understand exactly how we arrive at our offer.
24K is pure gold (99.9%). 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58.3% gold, and 10K is 41.7% gold. Higher karat means more gold content and higher value per gram.
Gold-plated items have minimal gold content and typically aren't worth selling for their metal value. We can evaluate your items to determine if they're solid gold or plated.
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver (marked as .925). Value depends on current silver spot prices and the weight of your items. We evaluate and purchase all sterling silver.
